Dr. Steven S. Wesolowski's Advice

  • Set clear goals.
  • Talk to people about your research and ask others about their research.
  • It's OK not to know something, but it's not OK if you don't find out.
  • Share information with others-- there's enough success to go around.
  • Ask often:
    "Does this make sense?"
    "How could this be better?"
"Who else would be interested in this work?"
  • Strive to improve your writing:
Even the best research will be ignored if it is not presented clearly.
Make it interesting. There are very few "boring" projects. Keep digging-- there is likely something interesting that you've overlooked.
Think about your paper from the reader's perspective. Would you read your paper if you were someone else and came across it in a journal?
Take the time to make excellent figures. Few scientists will read the entire text. Pictures tell the story.
  • LISTEN, READ, THINK, speak (in that order).
  • Encourage others, be a professional, take the high road.
  • Take time out to play golf (or whatever you find fun). Some of the best research ideas come when doing something else that's fun.
