  Professor Schaefer presents the C. V. Raman Memorial Lecture at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), India. Professor Raman discovered the Raman Effect at the IACS in 1928, one of the greatest scientific discoveries of the 20th century. Among chemists, previous recipients of this honor have included Nobelists Roald Hoffmann and Ahmed Zewail.
